FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to organic chemistry and specifically to a method of producing dimethyl ester of 2,6-dimethyl-4-(2-nitrophenyl)-1,4-dihydropyridine-3,5-dicarboxylic acid (nifedipine) of formula (1) by heating 2-nitrobenzaldehyde with methyl ether of acetoacetic acid and aqueous ammonia without solvent, characterized in that the reaction is carried out in the presence of aerosil (commercially available nano-sized silicon oxide) at 45–50 °C for 5–5.5 hours, ratio of 2-nitrobenzaldehyde, methyl ether of acetoacetic acid and ammonia is 1:2:2.4, purification of the end product is carried out together with a step for separating the catalyst from hot methanol or ethanol.

EFFECT: one-step method of producing nifedipine using an available heterogeneous catalyst, characterized by high output of the end product.
