FIELD: chemical or physical processes.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to an improved method of oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane. Method for oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane involves steps of feeding a gas stream containing ethane and propane into a distillation column to obtain a stream containing propane, and a stream containing ethane; feeding at least a portion of a gas stream containing ethane obtained in step (a) into a reactor; oxygen and ethane and optionally ethylene are brought into contact with catalyst, containing mixed metal oxide; cooling the flow leaving the reactor and simultaneously and/or at the next step adding water to the effluent from the reactor to obtain a liquid stream, containing water and acetic acid and a gas stream containing ethylene; removing wax acid from the liquid stream obtained in step (d) using solvent extraction; wherein at least 50 wt % mixed metal oxide in catalyst used at step (c) is in orthorhombic crystalline phase M1; and wherein mixed metal oxide in catalyst, used at stage (c), contains: molybdenum, vanadium and antimony or molybdenum, vanadium, niobium and optionally tellurium or antimony.

EFFECT: aim is to achieve relatively high activity and/or relatively high selectivity of converting ethane to ethylene; another is to obtain relatively pure ethylene; additional objective is extraction of relatively pure acetic acid.
