FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: use of contactless high-speed monitoring of state of deformed metal surface and early diagnostics of damages of structures made from titanium alloys used in water media. Essence of the invention lies in the fact that the method involves installation of a comparison electrode near a potentially hazardous surface area (voltage concentrator) of a titanium alloy structure in an aqueous medium, deforming the structure by applying an external force until the appearance of defects (sliding lines, twins, cracks, etc.) on the surface of the metal structure, formation of negative jump of electrode potential of deformed titanium alloy at the moment of exit to surface of dislocation cluster or microcrack, its registration by means of comparison electrode and amplifier in frequency band 0.1–30 kHz, wherein the useful signal is negative electrode potential jumps caused by dissolving titanium in an aqueous medium in the local region of rupture of TiO2 oxide film.
EFFECT: high degree of reliability of diagnosing early stages of formation of surface damages of titanium alloys used in an aqueous medium, and detection of intercrystalline and trans-crystalline fracture as per statistical function of distribution of amplitudes of electrochemical potential discontinuities.
