SUBSTANCE: invention relates to loading and unloading works in sea port. Technical result is achieved by using closed coal transfer system, feature of which is that sea ship hold has shelter. System warehouse is equipped with devices for temperature control, monitoring system for content of methane in air inside warehouse, ventilation and air exchange system, return conveyor lines for coal cooling, backup storage sites and "dry mist" water-dust suppression system. Technical result is achieved using method of operation of closed coal transfer system. Special feature of the method is that before covering the coal in the hold of the sea ship the cover is developed. During storage of coal in a closed spill-type storage facility, temperature of stored coal is measured, methane content in air inside the storage is monitored, providing constant air exchange and ventilation, using return conveyor lines for coal cooling, periodic replacement of old coal from stack with coal of new batch with preliminary complete shipment of old coal, providing saturation of pile of coal with water to 10–12 % and visually observing external signs of occurrence of self-heating spots of coal.

EFFECT: ensuring industrial safety during storage of coal in a closed spill-type stock and during loading of coal into a ship's hold.
