FIELD: biochemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a mutant tobacco plant cell for reducing nitrate levels in a mutant tobacco plant, as well as to a tobacco plant, a portion thereof, tobacco plant material, as well as to a tobacco composition containing said cell. Also disclosed is a method of reducing content of nitrates in at least part of a tobacco plant, comprising introducing into genome of tobacco plant one or more mutations within at least one allele of CLC family member of chloride channels, as well as a method of producing dried vegetable material of tobacco, preferably dried leaves, with reduced levels of 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK). Invention also relates to a polynucleotide structure for reducing nitrate levels in a tobacco plant, as well as a vector for reducing nitrate levels in a tobacco plant, containing above described structure.
EFFECT: invention allows efficient production of tobacco plant with reduced nitrate levels.
