FIELD: metallurgy.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to butt welding of two metal sheets (2, 4). First metal sheet (2) and second metal sheet (4) are provided, butt welding of metal sheets (2, 4) is performed in welding direction. Butt welding comprises simultaneous emission of: first front laser beam (12) forming first front spot (18) at intersection with first metal sheet (2) and generating first front through penetration in first metal sheet (2) at first front spot (18), second front laser beam (14) forming second front spot (20) at intersection with second metal sheet (4) and generating second front through penetration in second metal sheet (4) at second front spot (20), and rear laser beam (16) forming rear spot (22) on first and second metal sheets (2, 4) and generating rear through penetration in first and second metal sheets (2, 4) at rear spot (22). First and second front laser beams (12, 14) and the back laser beam (16) are directed so that at each instant of time between the first forward through penetration and rear through penetration and between second front through penetration and rear through penetration remain area of solid phase and/or area of liquid phase of metal sheets (2, 4).

EFFECT: method of butt welding according to invention enables to weld metal sheets (2), (4) with specified efficiency of energy use, even if metal sheets are located with considerable gap between them.
