SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of computer technology, in particular to a method for operating a programmable logic controller. The method comprises the stages at which the modules are connected to an address assignment bus with a serial connection and to a data exchange bus with a parallel connection; exchange data via the address assignment bus in case of failure of the data exchange bus; automatically assign an address to at least one module via the address assignment bus, moreover, the data packet forms a computing module and transmits this packet to at least one module, which receives the data packet, writes the value of the counter as an address on the bus, adds the value of one to the value of the counter, and transmits the packet to at least the next module, in which the operation is repeated; the exchange of working data is carried out at the request of the computing module, or at the request of at least one module, or a broadcast request is made; operating ability of at least one module is monitored by checking the time of the packet acceptance via the data exchange bus connected in series; and if the time exceeds the specified value, the connection with the module is considered lost; at least one module is replaced in case of malfunction, and the new module is configured automatically.
