SUBSTANCE: invention relates to decoding images. Disclosed is a method for encoding an image with prediction. The method includes: determining an optimal prediction mode from a set of prediction methods for a pixel signal of a target block; the predicted signal is generated according to the mode; the residual signal is determined between the pixel signal of the target block and the predicted signal; the residual signal and the optimal prediction mode are encoded to generate a compressed signal; the compressed signal is restored; the reconstructed signal is stored as a reproduced pixel signal. The candidate prediction mode list is generated as a list containing elements of the optimal prediction modes of a plurality of previously reproduced blocks adjacent to the target block; a flag for indicating whether the list contains an element corresponding to the optimal prediction mode is encoded; the index of the corresponding element is encoded if the corresponding element is present in the list; the optimal prediction mode is encoded based on the numbering of the items in the list, provided that the corresponding item is not in the list.

EFFECT: invention improves the efficiency of decoding the coded information of the mode.
