FIELD: aluminum production.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method and an electrochemical device for determining the content of alumina in cryolite-alumina melt during the electrolytic production of aluminum. The method includes immersing an electrochemical device in a cryolite-alumina melt, polarization using a current source of the electrochemical device by multiple linear sweeping of its potential to the anode side until the anode effect is achieved and vice versa, and determining from a sample of the obtained volt-ampere dependences of the average peak value of the current response with subsequent determination of the current content alumina based on the empirical dependence of the peak value of the current response on the alumina content. The electrochemical device contains a working electrode made of a carbon material with a boron nitride dielectric, rigidly fixed in a corundum tube, at the other end of which the working electrode is connected to a current source, and a counter electrode made of a metal alloying with aluminum, mainly copper, is attached to the corundum tube outside. moreover, the distance between the working electrode and the counter electrode is not less than 5 mm.
EFFECT: increased accuracy and simplification of measurements and design of an electrochemical device with the possibility of prompt replacement of failed elements of the device.
