FIELD: chemical industry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the chemical industry and can be used in the production of thickening agents. First, a suspension of gormite clay is obtained by dispersing in an aqueous medium a fraction of one or more gormite clays selected from sepiolites and paligorskites containing less than 3.0 wt % Al2O3, less than 1.0 wt % Fe2O3 and less than 3.5 wt % combination of Al2O3 and Fe2O3. Then a suspension of smectite clay is obtained by dispersing in an aqueous medium a fraction of one or more smectite clays selected from hectorites, montmorillonites, bentonites, beidelites, saponites, stevenites and their mixtures. The resulting water suspensions can be sifted through a 100 mesh sieve to remove large particles. The resulting suspensions are affected by high-speed shear by passing them through a narrow gap at which the pressure difference is maintained. After that, the suspensions are combined so that the content based on hormite clay exceeds the mass of the content based on smectite clay, and treated with one or more quaternary alkylammonium salts selected from dimethyldi chloride(C14-18 alkyl)ammonium, methylbenzyldi chloride(C14-18 alkyl)ammonium, dimethylbenzyl chloride (C14-18 alkyl)ammonium, methylsulfate dimethyl (C14-18 alkyl)(2-ethylhexyl)ammonium and their mixtures. The amount of this quaternary alkylammonium salt per 100 g of clay in suspension is 5-80 mmol. The combined suspension of these clays can also be affected by high-speed shear. The treated mixture can be separated from the aqueous medium. The resulting rheological additive containing a mixture of mineral organoglins treated with quaternary alkylammonium salt can be used to effectively thicken a liquid organic composition selected from coating materials, sealants, adhesives, drilling fluids for oil or gas wells, composite materials, molding compositions and liquid organic compositions containing, in addition to the specified rheological additive, one or more organic solvents. The content of the specified rheological additive based on the total mass of the liquid composition is 0.1-10 wt %. This rheological additive can also be used in liquid compositions of epoxy resins containing a hardener with groups reacting with epoxy groups, selected from diamines, polyamines, polyamides and anhydrides of cyclic carboxylic acids and their mixtures.
EFFECT: invention can be used in the production of thickening agents.
