The method for operation of an engine of a hybrid vehicle includes registering a point in time wherein the amount or rate of change of the target driving force for the vehicle reaches or exceeds a predetermined threshold, then calculating the estimate trajectory of the engine speed in accordance with the amount or rate of change of the target driving force. When a power generation change request is issued to the engine at a point in time other than said point in time, the engine speed is controlled based on the calculated estimate trajectory.
