FIELD: nuclear industry
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the system and method of active scanning of the fuel rod of a nuclear reactor. The system contains an electrically driven neutron generator, a moderator located around the neutron generator; a channel for the fuel rod located inside the moderator, designed to affect the fuel rod with a stream of neutrons with specified parameters; and a set of radiation detectors. The channel for the fuel rod contains an inner epithermal shell having an inner layer and an outer layer, while the said inner layer is designed to scatter fast neutrons in the epithermal region, the outer layer consists of a burnable absorber for absorbing thermal neutrons. Exposing a fuel rod to a neutron flux with specified parameters induces the emission of prompt and delayed gamma rays, neutron radiation, or a combination of both, detected by a variety of radiation detectors.
EFFECT: provided is ability to determine the amount of fissile material in the fuel rod, the spatial distribution of the fissile material along the length of the fuel rod, the percentage of enrichment, the total amount of uranium in grams, and any deviations in the tablets in the fuel rod.
