The method for receiving optical signals using an avalanche photodiode includes threshold processing of signals and the formation of output pulses when the signal from the output of the photodiode exceeds the specified response threshold. The values of the multiplied and non-multiplied noise currents of the photodiode and the noise factor of the avalanche multiplication are preliminarily determined, after which the avalanche multiplication factor Μ of the photodiode is set so that its value, taking into account the adjustment tolerance, is close to the optimal value where Ι02 and Jm2 are, respectively, the squares of the components of the non-multiplied and multiplied noise currents of the photodiode in the avalanche-free mode, reduced to its output; α is the noise factor determined by the structure of the photodiode. The threshold of the threshold device is adjusted so that the frequency f of exceeding the threshold level by emissions of the noise process is within f1<f<f2, where f1 and f2 are the lower and upper tolerance limits for the frequency f, and the f=Ν/Τ value is determined by counting the number N output pulses in a predetermined time T.
