FIELD: satellite communication networks.
SUBSTANCE: user terminal includes a reconfigurable phased antenna array having a variety of antenna elements, and it is made with the possibility of extending the coverage area of the reconfigurable phased antenna array, receiving signals from a variety of satellites within the coverage area using the reconfigurable phased antenna array, determining one or more signs of received signals relatively to each of the satellites and selecting one satellite of the specified variety of satellites for communication based on the signs of received signals. After selecting a satellite, the user terminal is made with the possibility to switch the reconfigurable phased antenna array into directional mode, establish communication with the selected satellite using the reconfigurable phased antenna array and track the selected satellite. Ephemeris data transmitted by satellites is used by the user terminal for satellite tracking and for transferring services between satellites.
EFFECT: providing the possibility of initial reception of signals from the variety of satellites in the extended coverage area to select a suitable satellite.
