FIELD: cellular communication systems.
SUBSTANCE: base stations and user terminals adaptively configure a digital precoder codebook for hybrid beam forming based on millimeter waves by defining at least one analog beam former and unifier; defining on the user terminal the lowest resolution of the digital pre-coding codebook, which is used to achieve at least one performance parameter; and messaging to the base station the certain lowest resolution of the digital pre-coding codebook. Adjusting the resolution of the digital precoder codebook, in addition to analog beam forming, by different radio resources (by time/frequency) optimizes the feedback efficiency for the user terminal. The user terminal also receives an auxiliary parameter from the base station related to the achievable performance improvement using digital pre-coding. The user terminal uses the received auxiliary parameter when determining the resolution of the digital precoder codebook. 
EFFECT: development of a mechanism for improving the efficiency of operation of a cellular system operating in the millimeter wave range based on a hybrid beam forming structure.
