FIELD: electrical engineering.

SUBSTANCE: inventions relate to the damage detection in an insulating layer of an insulated conductor laid under the ground surface. A locator contains a magnetometer made with the possibility to detect a magnetic field generated by alternating current and generate a current signal based on the detected magnetic field, and contains an AC voltage gradient receiver containing a pair of sensors made with the possibility of electrical contact with the ground surface. The receiver is made with the possibility to generate a voltage signal showing the voltage between the pair of sensors. A processor is made with the possibility to essentially synchronously sample the current signal and the voltage signal.

EFFECT: possibility to improve the damage detection in the insulating layer of the insulated conductor.
