SUBSTANCE: invention relates to herbicidally active pyridine-/pyrimidine pyridine derivatives of a compound by the formula (I) or a salt thereof, wherein X1 represents N or CR1; R1 represents halogen or cyano; R2 represents halogen, cyano, a C1-C6alkyl or a C1-C6halogenalkyl; R3 represents -C(O)R9; R4 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, a C1-C6alkyl, a C1-C6 halogenalkyl, a C3-C6alkenyl, a C3-C6alkynyl, a CralcoxyCsalkyl, a -CralcoxyCshalogenalkyl, a CralcoxyCsthioalkyl, -C(O)R9 and -(CRaRb)qR5, each Ra independently represents hydrogen or a C1-C2alkyl; each Rb independently represents hydrogen or a C1-C2alkyl; Rc represents hydrogen or a C1-C4alkyl; R5 represents -C(O)OC1-C6alkyl, -C3-C6cycloalkyl, cyano, -NR6R7, -C(O)NRaRb, -S(O)p(R11)n, -phenyl, pyridine or thiazole, wherein said phenyl, pyridine and thiazole are optionally substituted with 1 to 3 independent R8; R6 and R7 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and a C1-C6alkyl; each R8 is independently selected from the group consisting of halogen, a C1-C6alkyl, a C1-C6halogenalkyl; each R9 is independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, a C1-C6alkyl, a CralcoxyCsalkyl, a C1-C6halogenalkyl, a CralcoxyCshalogenalkyl, a C2-C6alkenyl, a C2-C6alkynyl, and -(CRaRb)qR10; or R4 and R9 together with the atoms whereto they are attached form a 5-7-membered ring system containing 1 hetero-atom, wherein said hetero-atom represents N; R10 represents -C(O)ORc, -OC(O)Rc, cyclopropyl, cyclobutyl, cyclopentyl, cyclohexyl, or a ring system selected from phenyl, phenoxy, pyridinyl, pyrimidinyl, thiazolyl and thiophenyl, wherein said ring system is optionally substituted with 1 to 3 independent R8; each n independently equals 0; p equals 0, 1 or 2; each q independently equals 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6; r equals 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5; s equals 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5, and the sum r+s equals 6 or less; and R11 represents a C1-C6alkyl, as a herbicide. The invention also relates to compounds by the formula (I).

EFFECT: pyridine-pyrimidine derivatives exhibiting herbicidal activity.
