SUBSTANCE: invention relates to herbicidally active pyridine-/pyrimidine pyridine derivatives of a compound by the formula (I) or a salt thereof, wherein X¹ represents N or CR¹; R¹ represents halogen or cyano; R² represents halogen, cyano, a C₁-C₆alkyl or a C₁-C₆halogenalkyl; R³ represents -C(O)R⁹; R⁴ is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, a C₁-C₆alkyl, a C₁-C₆ halogenalkyl, a C₃-C₆alkenyl, a C₃-C₆alkynyl, a C_ralcoxyC_salkyl, a -C_ralcoxyC_shalogenalkyl, a C_ralcoxyC_sthioalkyl, -C(O)R⁹ and -(CR^aR^b)_qR⁵, each R^a independently represents hydrogen or a C₁-C₂alkyl; each R^b independently represents hydrogen or a C₁-C₂alkyl; R^c represents hydrogen or a C₁-C₄alkyl; R⁵ represents -C(O)OC₁-C₆alkyl, -C₃-C₆cycloalkyl, cyano, -NR⁶R⁷, -C(O)NR^aR^b, -S(O)_p(R¹¹)_n, -phenyl, pyridine or thiazole, wherein said phenyl, pyridine and thiazole are optionally substituted with 1 to 3 independent R⁸; R⁶ and R⁷ are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and a C₁-C₆alkyl; each R⁸ is independently selected from the group consisting of halogen, a C₁-C₆alkyl, a C₁-C₆halogenalkyl; each R⁹ is independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, a C₁-C₆alkyl, a C_ralcoxyC_salkyl, a C₁-C₆halogenalkyl, a C_ralcoxyC_shalogenalkyl, a C₂-C₆alkenyl, a C₂-C₆alkynyl, and -(CR^aR^b)_qR¹⁰; or R⁴ and R⁹ together with the atoms whereto they are attached form a 5-7-membered ring system containing 1 hetero-atom, wherein said hetero-atom represents N; R¹⁰ represents -C(O)OR^c, -OC(O)R^c, cyclopropyl, cyclobutyl, cyclopentyl, cyclohexyl, or a ring system selected from phenyl, phenoxy, pyridinyl, pyrimidinyl, thiazolyl and thiophenyl, wherein said ring system is optionally substituted with 1 to 3 independent R⁸; each n independently equals 0; p equals 0, 1 or 2; each q independently equals 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6; r equals 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5; s equals 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5, and the sum r+s equals 6 or less; and R¹¹ represents a C₁-C₆alkyl, as a herbicide. The invention also relates to compounds by the formula (I).
