FIELD: chemical processes.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method and apparatus for processing carbon irradiated in a reactor of an NPP. The method includes selecting a method for separating Carbon isotopes from a group of separation technologies: gas diffusion, nozzle method, gas centrifugation, aerodynamic separation method, laser method. Then working gas is produced from the irradiated NPP Carbon to extract 14C isotope atoms by the selected separation method. The 14C isotope is then isolated on a single-stage separation unit or a cascade of said units and separated in a separation unit. Separation is executed to a level ensuring, in a fraction for collection from a single unit or cascade, depleted by the content of 14C isotope, the activity of 14C isotope below the level allowing for near-surface disposal of radioactive waste, then sorting, compaction, differentiated disposal of radioactive waste, and return of the waste to nature with natural activity are executed. The apparatus comprises a unit for processing Carbon into working gas for a Carbon isotope separation unit, the output whereof is supplied to the input of the separation unit.
EFFECT: creation of separated fractions of the working gas with a content of 14C isotope above the initial content and with a content of 14C isotope reduced to a level allowing for near-surface disposal.
