Said result is achieved by obtaining 2D fragment of a point cloud by projecting 3D points of the point cloud onto a projection plane, wherein the fragment has a plurality of pixels. Fragment is divided into multiple smaller units. Determining the number of pixels in each of the plurality of smaller blocks. Updated occupancy map is obtained based on a certain number of pixels in each of the plurality of smaller blocks. Reconstructed point cloud is obtained based on updated occupancy map, wherein the reconstructed point cloud is a less dense representation of the point cloud.

EFFECT: high efficiency of encoding or decoding video.
