SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of gas industry and is intended for the operation of underground natural gas storages (UNGS). The composition of the non-hydrocarbon mixture of gases contains carbon dioxide not more than 85%, nitrogen not more than 55%, carbon monoxide not more than 30%. The method for operating an underground natural gas storage facility includes the construction of production wells with the opening of the reservoir collectors, cyclic injection of natural gas into the storage facility with the creation of a buffer and active volumes of it and the withdrawal of an active volume of natural gas, while during the operation of the underground gas storage a non-hydrocarbon mixture is pumped into its lower part gases with replacement in the buffer volume of natural gas.

EFFECT: increasing the efficiency of UNGS operation with a combined buffer volume of gas.
