SUBSTANCE: invention relates to metallurgy and can be used to control the discharge of magnesium chloride from the apparatus during the magnetothermal reduction of spongy titanium. The method includes installation of the reduction apparatus, magnesium pouring, titanium tetrachloride supply, titanium tetrachloride reduction with magnesium with periodic drains of magnesium chloride, weighing buckets with magnesium chloride after each drain, calculation of the accumulation of magnesium chloride in the reduction apparatus. In one drain, the accumulation of magnesium chloride is maintained at 9.3-15.1% of the average mass of the merged magnesium chloride. In order to avoid understating the melt level and exposing the titanium sponge block, the position of the melt level in the crucible is monitored at the level of the reactor air cooling zone with a change in its position in the crucible of no more than 17% of the initial level.

EFFECT: invention makes it possible, by changing the level, to preserve a sufficient amount of melt in the crucible, eliminating undesirable reactions of titanium tetrachloride with a block of spongy titanium.
