SUBSTANCE: described herein are systems and methods for suppressing the flashing of an avalanche photodiode (APD) and improving the accuracy of recording a multiple-return light signal. A flashing spot may occur due to saturation of the primary APD. Systems and methods include the introduction of a backup APD and use of time diversity and spatial diversity. Recording by means of the APD is activated by a displacement (voltage) signal. The backup APD receives a time-delayed displacement signal in comparison with the primary APD. Additionally, the backup APD is located outside of the main focal plane in order to attenuate the output signal of the backup APD. Due to the attenuation, the backup APD may not be saturated and may have effective recording in the conditions of the flashing spot of the primary APD. Variants of implementation may include multiple primary APDs and multiple secondary APDs.
