FIELD: paper industry.

SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to the manufacture of paper and cardboard. A composition suitable for use as a retaining auxiliary agent in a method for manufacturing paper or cardboard contains cross-linked anionic organic polymer microparticles, which, in a non-swollen state, have z-average diameter equal to less than 0.75 mcm. Organic polymer microparticles are obtained from a monomer mixture containing: (a) ethylene-unsaturated carboxylic acid or its salt; (b) ethylene-unsaturated non-ionogenic monomer; and (c) from 1 to 10 mol.% of 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropansulfonic acid or its salt. To manufacture paper or cardboard, a cellulose suspension is obtained and dehydrated on a mesh to obtain a sheet, which is then dried. A retention system is used, which is added to the cellulose suspension. The retention system contains an aqueous composition obtained from the above-described composition. The above-described composition is used as a retaining auxiliary agent in a method for manufacturing paper or cardboard.

EFFECT: improved retention of auxiliary agents, in particular ash, in paper is provided.
