FIELD: chemical processes.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method and a unit for synthesising zinc oxide from metallic zinc by a gas phase method from metallic zinc, followed by oxidation of metal vapours in the process of production of zinc oxide (zinc white). Method for synthesising zinc oxide from metallic zinc includes heating, melting, evaporating zinc in a muffle, followed by oxidation of the vapours in air, wherein air for oxidation in a muffle furnace is supplied in at least two streams with a cross section of at least 0.1 of the area of the muffle outlet each, at a rate of at least 5 m/s, and directed perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the muffle, at a distance of zinc vapours from the outlet of 0.5 to 2 times the inner diameter of the muffle, wherein the total amount of oxidising air in the streams is provided in the range of 12 to 30 m3 per 1 kg of zinc vapours. Disclosed is a unit for producing zinc oxide by the above method, containing a body made of fire-retardant materials and a fire chamber for natural gas combustion, wherein located inside the chamber is a ceramic muffle, the open hole whereof leads into the oxidation chamber configured to supply air for zinc vapour oxidation through the nozzle.

EFFECT: production of highly dispersed zinc oxide with a specific surface area of 7.5 to 35 m2/g.
