SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of mechanical engineering, in particular to methods for measuring the diameter of a tree trunk. The method is implemented using a device containing a measuring tape, a body, a fixing device for the position of a cylindrical cassette relative to the body, and a fixture for gripping the measuring tape. The body is attached to the trunk of the selected tree in the cylindrical cavity of the body. Insert a cylindrical cassette with a built-in rotation angle sensor with a linear characteristic. A drum is installed on the rotating handle of the rotation angle sensor. The free end of the measuring tape is passed through the through hole of the side wall of the housing. The measuring tape is pulled out of the body, covering the tree trunk with it. The capture of the measuring tape is fixed in the mount on the outer surface of the housing. The cylindrical cassette is rotated in the direction that ensures the winding of the measuring tape on the drum until it is firmly pressed against the tree trunk. While maintaining the position of the sensor handle in the position corresponding to the origin of the angle of rotation, the position of the cylindrical cassette relative to the body is fixed with a latch. A blind cover is installed on top of the body. Wires are connected to the sensor contacts. A cover with a through hole is installed on the body from below, while passing wires through its through hole to the wires. An analog-to-digital converter is connected.

EFFECT: reduction of labor input of measuring works is achieved.
