FIELD: communication.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of technologies of communication networks; it can be used for assignment of identifiers for switches in a stack. The switch reads an identifier of a terminal stored in an optical module connected to a stack port of the switch, while the specified optical module is located at one end of am optical cable. A condition of assignment by the specified switch of identifiers for N stack switches in a direction starting from the switch performing the assignment to another switch connected to the stack port is fulfilled, while the terminal identifier has a given value, and N is not less than 2.

EFFECT: increase in the efficiency of assignment of identifiers for switches in a stack.
