FIELD: optics.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to optical attenuators for the implementation of preset attenuation of the emission intensity in optical apparatus, in particular, in fibre-optic communication lines, communication optical equipment, and laser equipment. Stepped optical attenuator consists of N series-connected single attenuators located on a single optical axis, wherein each nth single attenuator, n≤N, is characterised by the value of the optical power loss limit Plim(n)=Pin(n)-Pout(n), wherein Pin(n) is the emission power at the input of the nth stage, Pout(n) is the emission power at the output of the nth stage. The attenuation coefficient Katt(n) at the nth stage is set by the formula Katt(n)=10 lg((Pin(n)-Plim(n))/Pin(n)).
EFFECT: higher maximum input power of the attenuator with the maintained level of stability of the characteristics thereof.
