SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of hydroacoustics and can be used to build systems for automatic detection of echo signals received by a sonar against the background of noise and reverberation interference, and its classification using pseudo-noise signals. To ensure the effect, a method for classifying objects is proposed, containing the emission of a probing pseudo-noise signal, receiving an echo signal, performing optimal multi-channel correlation processing, including measuring interference, measuring the amplitude of correlation functions, choosing a correlation function with a maximum amplitude Amax, determining the time position TAmax of the maximum correlation function, the result of cross-correlation processing with the maximum amplitude Amax and the realization of the input signal before processing in a wide band are simultaneously compared, ТAmax is taken for the end time of the received signal at the input current, the average value of the interference Aint and the threshold in a wide band are determined, the amplitudes of temporary realizations are measured sequentially in time in a wide frequency band that exceeded the threshold, the time position of the amplitude of the first realization that exceeded the threshold Tin is determined, the time position of the final amplitude that exceeded the threshold Tfin is determined, and the difference (Tin - Tfin) is determined, while if (Tin - Tfin)>2Tsig, where Tsig is the duration of the probing signal, the difference (Tin - Tok) is determined, and if (Tin – Tok)>0.1Tsig, it is decided that the target is surface, if (Tin – Tok)> 0.1Tsig, it is decided that the target is underwater.
