FIELD: measuring tools.
SUBSTANCE: determining residual stresses in a thin hard stressed coating deposited on a non-rigid substrate. For a product with a coating in which residual stresses are present and there is a penetration diagram from a single indentation indicating the limiting load value, an elastic loading curve is constructed for the coating without the presence of residual stresses in it by conducting a repeated indentation cycle in the imprint from the primary indentation cycle, analysis of loading and unloading curves of the second cycle of indentation, analytical processing of these curves, which allows to determine the value of the limiting load of indentation for a product with a non-stressed coating and the depth of a plastic imprint in a stressed coating, which makes it possible to calculate the level of residual stresses in the coating according to the known dependence proposed in the prototype.
EFFECT: possibility to conveniently determine the magnitude and sign of residual stresses in thin coatings deposited on non-rigid substrates.
