FIELD: process for synthesis of vinyl aromatic polymers.
SUBSTANCE: method includes the step of polymerizing vinyl aromatic monomers using an atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) reaction with a single electron transfer regenerating activator (SETRA). This reaction is carried out at a temperature in the range of 25°C to 110°C in an inert gas atmosphere in presence of a complex catalyst. Next, an organic initiator is added to the reaction mixture, provided that no initiators containing three or more active halogen atoms, or polyvinyl monomers or inimers are used. The complex catalyst contains a divalent copper halide and a multidentate amine ligand. The organic initiator contains two geminal halogen atoms, an alkali metal (bi)carbonate, a solvent pair formed from an aliphatic alcohol and an acetic ester of the same aliphatic alcohol, and optionally ascorbic acid.
EFFECT: development of a method for synthesis of vinyl aromatic polymers, which makes it possible to control the sequence of monomers in the chain and a linear, branched soluble or cross-linked insoluble structure having reactive functionalities or functionalities having different polarities.
