SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to group 8 transition metal catalysts for the metathesis of olefins, methods for synthesizing catalysts, methods for activating a catalyst, their use in various methods for the metathesis of olefins, for example, ring closing metathesis (RCM), cross metathesis (CM), ring opening metathesis (ROM), ring opening metathesis polymerisation (ROMP), self-metathesis, reaction of alkenes with alkynes, and to a method for producing an alpha-olefin, which comprises contacting an unsaturated fatty acid ester and/or an unsaturated fatty acid alkyl ester with an alkene and catalysts, where the obtained alpha-olefin contains at least one carbon atom more than alkene. Catalysts are characterised by general structures of formulae (I), (II) or (VII), where the values of the radicals are indicated in the claims.
