FIELD: electrical chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: method for producing ammonia, including: supplying N2 to an electrolytic cell containing at least one source of protons; enabling N2 contact with the surface of the cathode electrode in an electrolytic cell, where the surface of the cathode electrode contains a catalytic surface containing at least one transition metal oxide selected from the group consisting of niobium oxide, tantalum oxide, osmium oxide, rhenium oxide and iridium oxide, where at least one transition metal oxide contains at least one surface having a face; and passing a current through this electrolytic cell, whereby nitrogen reacts with protons to form ammonia. The invention also relates to a system.
EFFECT: obtaining ammonia at room ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure.
