FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of producing ammonia. Method comprises: supplying N2 to an electrolytic cell which comprises a cathode, an anode, an electrolyte and at least one proton source; providing contact of N2 with electrode surface of cathode in electrolytic cell, wherein said electrode surface includes a catalytic surface containing at least one transition metal sulphide selected from the group consisting of yttrium sulphide, scandium sulphide, zirconium sulphide, titanium sulphide, vanadium sulphide, chromium sulphide, niobium sulphide, nickel sulphide, iron sulphide, manganese sulphide, cobalt sulphide, iridium sulphide, copper sulphide, osmium sulphide, ruthenium sulphide and rhodium sulphide, wherein the catalytic surface includes at least one surface having a halite structure, NiAs-type structure or pyrite structure; and passing current through said electrolytic cell, as a result of which nitrogen reacts with protons to form ammonia. Also disclosed is a system for producing ammonia in said method, containing a catalyst based on a transition metal sulphide.
EFFECT: use of the disclosed invention enables to efficiently obtain ammonia at room temperature and atmospheric pressure.
