SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in metaverse client terminals, augmented reality or virtual reality (AR/VR) systems. A method is proposed for generating a virtual scene containing one or more 3D objects, which includes creating a 3D model of a 3D scene of the real world; capturing an image of a 3D real world scene using a physical camera to obtain the captured image; creating a digital camera model for a physical camera; rendering a virtual 3D scene containing virtual 3D objects based on a digital camera model using physically based rendering software to obtain a virtual image; minimizing the discrepancy norm between the captured image and the virtual image to optimize the positions and surface parameters of virtual 3D objects in a virtual 3D scene. A system and machine-readable media are also proposed that implement this method, which also provides more accurate rendering of surface texture, shapes and positions of 3D real-world objects in a virtual 3D scene.
