FIELD: ice science.

SUBSTANCE: method to study piles of sea ice – hummocks and stamukhas. Polypropylene was chosen to imitate ice. The stand is a tank filled to 3/4 with water, in which a black partition is installed next to the transparent front wall at a distance 1.1-1.5 times greater than the thickness of the ice imitation blocks. Gaps with a width corresponding to the maximum width of the ice imitation blocks are left between the partition and the side walls of the tank. Through the side gaps, ice simulator blocks are placed sequentially one after another on both sides between the partition and the front wall in a floating position. Under the influence of external horizontal forces on both sides, both rows of blocks move towards the central part of the stand. In the centre, there is a collision of blocks lined up and their subsequent piling up imitating hummocking of ice. After completing the experiment, the model hummock is photographed, the image is processed using a computer, and porosity of the model hummock is calculated from it as the ratio of the pore area in the selected segment to the total area of the segment.

EFFECT: ability to measure porosity of a model hummock, as the ratio of the pore area in a selected segment to the total area of the segment, using image processing.
