FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: invention can be used to obtain directly reduced iron. In step a) the metal material to be recovered is loaded into the furnace. In step b) the existing atmosphere is pumped out of the furnace to create a vacuum inside the furnace space. In step c), heat and hydrogen gas are supplied to the furnace to heat the charged metal material with the heated hydrogen gas to a temperature high enough to reduce the metal oxides present in the metal material, resulting in the formation of water vapour. At stage (d), the water vapour formed at stage (c) is condensed and collected in a condenser under the loaded metal material. Hydrogen gas is supplied in step c) without recirculating the hydrogen gas. A subsequent step in which the recovered metal material is recovered and stored and/or transported in an inert atmosphere.
EFFECT: invention makes it possible to control the process of direct reduction of metal ore in a controlled hydrogen atmosphere to produce directly reduced sponge iron.
