FIELD: herbicides.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for producing the herbicide bentazone. The method involves reacting a solution of N-(2-methoxycarbonylphenyl)-N´-isopropylsulfamide in a solvent, which is a chlorinated hydrocarbon, with sodium methoxide at a temperature of 20-35°C. The molar ratio of N-(2-methoxycarbonylphenyl)-N´-isopropylsulfamide and sodium methoxide is 1: 1.4-2.5. The method further includes the extraction of the sodium derivative of bentazone from the reaction mass by aqueous extraction and the precipitation of bentazone by treating the aqueous extract with hydrochloric acid.

EFFECT: improved technical and economic indicators of production of bentazone due to simplified hardware design and reduced duration of the process, no use of methanol as an additional solvent, carrying out the process under milder process conditions, as well as obtaining a high-quality target product with a yield of 95 %.
