FIELD: optical devices.

SUBSTANCE: method for forming a laser beam with a rectangular cross-section and a uniform intensity distribution includes forming a laser beam, transforming its round cross-section into a square one by a forming system with an odd number of elements in the sagittal and meridional planes, and obtaining a uniform intensity distribution in its focal plane. The square cross-section of the laser beam is changed separately in the sagittal and meridional planes into a rectangular one with variable dimensions in a conversion system with a variable focal length, creating a uniform intensity distribution in the laser beam at specified variable ranges. In this case, the rear focal plane of the forming system and the front focal plane of the conversion system are combined, and the focal length of the conversion system is equal to the ratio of the product of the width of the element of the forming system and the given range to the given size of the rectangular section of the laser beam.

EFFECT: formation of a laser radiation beam with a rectangular cross-section with variable dimensions and a uniform intensity distribution at given variable ranges.
