FIELD: electric protection means.

SUBSTANCE: voltage and electric current in an electric line are measured. The first moving average and the second moving average are repeatedly calculated based on the measured current values, the second moving average being calculated over a duration longer than the first moving average. The measured voltage value is compared with a specified threshold voltage value. The current value of the first moving average is compared with the current value of the second moving average. Conditions for triggering the protection device are identified when the measured voltage value is lower than a predetermined voltage threshold value for a duration exceeding a predetermined duration threshold value, and when the current value of the first moving average exceeds the current value of the second moving average.

EFFECT: increase in the accuracy of detecting electrical faults in an electric installation.
