FIELD: medicine; spine surgery.
SUBSTANCE: Faley catheter is inserted into the oesophagus. A cuff is placed below the surgical level and the cuff is inflated to close the lumen of the oesophagus. Saline solution is poured into the surgical wound so that the oesophagus is hidden by the solution. An additional catheter is inserted into the oesophagus. Air is pumped into the oesophagus through a catheter. The state of the saline solution in the surgical wound is observed. When bubbles appear on the surface of the saline solution, the presence of damage to the oesophagus is determined and the location of the damage to the oesophagus coinciding with the place where the bubbles emerge is established. In the absence of bubbles on the surface of the saline solution, it is stated that there is no damage to the oesophagus in the area of surgical intervention in the cervical spine.
EFFECT: identification of pinpoint injuries of the oesophagus during operations on the cervical spine from an anterior approach in patients with traumatic or degenerative problems in the cervical spine, and ensuring the possibility to timely repair the damage.
