FIELD: data recording.

SUBSTANCE: methods for recording data in a solid substrate. The method comprises the stages of modulating the polarization angle of a coherent optical pulse sequence, and, while modulating the polarization angle, focusing the coherent optical pulse sequence onto a geometric location related to a region of space into which the coherent optical pulse sequence is focused with energy sufficient to modification of the birefringence of the substrate, moving through the solid substrate at a relative speed. The relative velocity, the locus width in the relative velocity direction, and the polarization angle modulation rate are such that the substrate receives, within the locus width, two or more pulses of an optical pulse train differing in polarization angle. These two or more pulses are recorded in different parts of the substrate within the locus width of two or more different symbols.

EFFECT: increase in recording density and data storage performance.
