SUBSTANCE: provided is a cryogenic cooling system comprising: cooled plate 2 thermally connected to cryogenic cooler 9, a thermal switch assembly and target assembly 5. Target unit 5 comprises target cooler 12 configured to obtain lower base temperature than cryogenic cooler 9. Thermal switch assembly 18 comprises one or more thermal switches 18 with a gas gap, wherein the thermal switch assembly has a first end thermally connected to cooled plate 2, and a second end thermally connected to target assembly 5. Sorption pump 22 is provided to control heat conductivity through unit 18 of thermal switch in accordance with temperature of sorption pump 22. Sorption pump 22 is thermally connected to cryogenic cooler 9 by thermal coupling 46 extending from cooled plate 2 to unit 18 of thermal switch. Sorption pump 22 is located in position along thermal connection 46 between unit 18 of thermal switch and cooled plate 2.
