FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to a composition for weakening, inhibiting and/or eliminating the growth of phytoplankton in a water body, comprising granules containing: 80.0–99.5 wt.% of active substance with specific gravity of more than 1.0 g/ml, which includes algicide based on peroxide, copper or aluminum or a combination thereof; and 0.5–20.0 wt.% of hydrophobic coating material with specific gravity less than 1.0 g ml, which includes a fatty acid or derivative thereof, wax, paraffin, rosin, silicone derivative or a combination thereof, wherein the active substance is encapsulated with a hydrophobic coating material. Also disclosed is a method of preventing and/or inhibiting the development of toxic phytoplankton bloom in a water body by adding said composition to a portion of the water body, having a toxic biomass of phytoplankton above 8,000 cells/ml or chlorophyll concentration above 3 mcg/l.

EFFECT: group of inventions provides gradual release of algicide along the water column (due to the use of granules which, after being introduced into the water body, first settle and then float).
