SUBSTANCE: invention relates to seismology and can be used to estimate the maximum possible magnitude of a technogenic earthquake in areas of development of subsurface resources and the earth's surface. Maximum possible depth of the anthropogenic earthquake hypocenter is determined based on the results of recording seismicity in the area of the ongoing or planned development of the subsoil or the earth's surface. Then, using the empirical relationship, the maximum possible magnitude of the technogenic earthquake is determined.
EFFECT: high reliability of estimating the maximum possible magnitude of a technogenic earthquake in areas of engineering development of subsurface resources and the earth's surface.
