FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method and a reactor for oxidising ammonia, particularly for producing nitric acid. Described is a method for catalytic oxidation of ammonia, involving: passing ammonia-containing gas (10), in the presence of oxygen, through catalyst (5) contained in reactor (1), wherein the catalyst is suitable for activating ammonia oxidation, thereby forming a process gas containing nitrogen oxides; and cooling the process gas in the reactor using the tubular heat exchanger (6), inside the tubes of which boiling water passes, and the process gas passes in the annular space surrounding the tubes, so that the process gas transfers heat to the outer surfaces of the tubes, wherein part (13) of process gas is directed as bypass flow of process gas along bypass path (7) provided in reactor and intended for at least partial bypass of heat exchange apparatus, said bypassed process gas stream after passing through the bypass path is mixed with cooled gas (12) passing through the heat exchanger, wherein flow rate of said bypassed process gas flow is controlled by at least one valve 9 in compliance with preset temperature of mixed process gas at reactor outlet. Also described is a reactor adapted for catalytic oxidation of ammonia, and a method of producing nitric acid, comprising oxidising ammonia using said method to obtain a process gas containing nitrogen oxides, and then forming nitric acid by absorbing nitrogen oxides in water.
EFFECT: creation of an efficient system for accurate and continuous control of temperature of process gas at the outlet of a reactor intended for oxidation of ammonia, in particular for production of nitric acid.
