SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of producing coal and petroleum pitches, used as binding and impregnating materials for producing graphitized electrodes, anode mass, structural carbon-carbon materials. Method involves modification by chemical reaction of coal and petroleum pitches with alpha-methylstyrene or styrene in the temperature range of 170–300 °C.

EFFECT: development of a method for modifying pitch, allowing to obtain a product with a high coke residue at a low softening temperature and applicable for both coal and petroleum pitches with softening temperatures in a wide range, which does not require preliminary synthesis of a plasticising additive.
