FIELD: electrochemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to an electrode assembly for producing hydrogen, comprising: an anode device, which comprises an anode located within an electrolytic chamber; cathode device containing a cathode located inside an electrolytic chamber containing an alkali metal hydroxide solution. Assembly is characterized by that the cathode comprises: an electrically conductive metal substrate made of stainless steel, mild steel, nickel or copper; and an electrocatalytic layer on the substrate containing at least one metal on the electrically conductive carrier material. Said at least one metal is in metal form or in the form of a metal compound, such as an oxide, and is selected from metals of the platinum, rhenium, nickel, cobalt and molybdenum group, and the electrocatalytic layer contains at least 50 vol.% of electrically conductive material of the carrier, which is formed from particles, the average size of which is less than 5 mcm (5 microns) and which are not metal particles. Invention also relates to an electrolysis method, use of a catalytic layer on an electrode, a method of providing a cathode, a modular or filter-press electrolyser.
EFFECT: used electrode provides low, but stable overvoltage of cathode, which also maintains stability for a long time.
