FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to metallurgy and can be used for production of powder micron particles and production of composite materials from them by methods of powder metallurgy. Method of producing metal powders by cutting involves imparting one of two rotational motions to a tool, and the other to a processed workpiece. Tool rotation axis is set perpendicular to workpiece rotation axis and on line of centres axis. Tool performs forced rotation around its axis. Rotary multifaceted cutter is used as the tool, rotation speed of rotary cutter is set at least by an order higher than that of workpiece rotation. Cutting edge of the rotary cutter is not straight in the cutting plane and is made in the form of a polyhedral closed contour, the vertices of which are located in the cutting plane, and the faces are made in the form of cutting arched edges deviating from the cutting plane to the cutter body.
EFFECT: obtaining metal powders with particles of micron size from various structural materials, including from plastic metals, by means of mechanical method of rotary turning with multifaceted cutters.
