FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to organic chemistry and specifically to a method of producing styrene oxide from styrene in two steps. At the first step, styrene chlorohydrin is obtained by reacting styrene with an equimolar amount of calcium hypochlorite in an aqueous solution at room temperature, stirring and bubbling carbon dioxide without controlling the pH of the reaction medium, followed by filtration, separation of organic phase in separator and its distillation in vacuum with fractionation on rectification column. At the second step, a solution of styrene chlorohydrin in an organochlorine solvent is reacted with an aqueous solution of an equimolar amount of sodium or potassium hydroxide at room temperature and intensive mixing with subsequent separation of organic phase in separator and its distillation in vacuum with fractionation on rectification column.
EFFECT: described method of producing styrene oxide is easy to use and enables to obtain the end product with high output of more than 80% and purity of more than 99% without using excess chemical reagents.
