SUBSTANCE: invention refers to medicine, namely to surgery and clinical laboratory diagnostics. Total concentration of tri- and dioxycholane bile acids in the bile outflowing through the bile duct drainage on 3rd postoperative day and in the postoperative period is determined in the patient being examined by the Pettenkofer reaction. Formula is used to calculate the total concentration of tri- and dioxycholanic bile acids (C), mg/l: C = (OD_test/OD_standard) × 500 × 10, where OD_test is optical density of test sample, units of optical density; OD_standard is optical density of a standard sample, units of optical density; 500 is concentration of cholic acid in a standard sample, mg/l; 10 is the conversion factor taking into account the dilution of the analysed bile. If concentration of total tri- and dioxycholan bile acids in bile is less than 150 mg/l, hepatic failure is diagnosed.

EFFECT: method provides higher accuracy of diagnosing hepatic failure in patients with external drainage of biliary tract in surgical diseases of hepatopancreatobiliary system in early postoperative period; prevent development of postoperative complications and patient’s infection.
